Polka Dot Cakes

I hope everyone had a wonderful, relaxing, and reflective Memorial Day. A couple of weeks ago I made two polka dot cakes for a birthday party my friend was co-hosting. 

She wanted a simple pink and red cake for her daughter and a dark blue and light blue cake for her friend’s son.

This is what I came up with.

The cake toppers made a huge difference, well that and natural lighting. Also using my dslr might have helped some. 

Both six inch cakes were vanilla with chocolate buttercream filling, and frosted with a vanilla buttercream. The polka dots and ribbon borders were a mix of 3/4 fondant and 1/4 gum paste. I used a fondant/gum paste mix to help speed the drying process. If you don’t like to use gum paste you can knead a small amount of tylose into the fondant. I used the bottom of a large tip and a small tip to cut out the circles.

The cakes were simple to decorate and turned out great.
