Last week, I made two baby shower cakes for one of my husband’s coworkers. The customer ordered a chocolate 1/4 sheet cake with ganche. He requested a light blue trim around the cake and a welcome message. The rest of the design was up to me. I was excited to make this cake.
My husband requested that I make a second cake with a different flavor for those that don’t like chocolate. The second cake was an 8 inch vanilla cake with a cookies and cream filling, frosted in a vanilla buttercream.
This was the first time I tasted the cookies and cream filling and it was delicious. Seriously! I scraped off the cream from the Oreo cookies, crushed the cookies in a freezer bag, and stirred it into a batch of vanilla buttercream. It was simple to make and tasted amazing.
I loved how the cakes turned out. I used the giraffe template (and idea) from My Cake School (<3). The giraffes and leaves are made from gum paste. I posted a gum paste bow tutorial earlier this week.
I used a Wilton tip 3 to make the dots. Once the buttercream had crusted, I smoothed down the dot's tips with my fingers.
The writing was difficult for me. I practiced writing the message on a plate and that turned out great. Once I started on the cake, my hands began shaking.
I recommend practicing, although it didn't help me, and writing in print. I also used a Wilton 3 tip to write the message.
Overall, I’m happy with how the cake turned out.
