I’m on a search to find the perfect strawberry cake recipe. I have a doctored cake mix recipe that is good, but I want to find a delicious scratch recipe.
Yesterday, I made the basic vanilla cake from the January/February 2013 issue of Food Network Magazine. I substituted strawberry milk for the whole milk, and added a teaspoon of strawberry extract. The cake didn’t do it for me. It tasted awful and was too dense. I’m really surprised they put that recipe in the magazine.
At least the frosting tasted great. I used my favorite chocolate buttercream recipe, and added an extra 1.5 ounces of chocolate.
The M&M’s do not stick well to the cake. I used my finger to break up the crusty frosting, so the candies would adhere to the side of the cake.
A large heart cookie cutter was used to make an outline in the center of the cake. I placed the candies on the outline, and filled in the heart.
This was a simple cake to make and decorate. It’s a great last minute cake.
