Marathon Training Week 15

This past week, I was 6 miles short of my meeting my total miles. My reasoning can be summed up in two words: burned out and heat. I don’t know if I’m actually burned out with running or if the heat is causing me to feel burned out. Either way, I’m sick of running when it’s 90+ degrees outside.

I was hoping I would have a month to run in cooler temperatures before the marathon, but it doesn’t look like that is going to happen. All I can hope for now, is cooler temperatures during the marathon.

Monday- Rest

Tuesday- 4 easy miles on the treadmill

Wednesday- 7 miles on the treadmill with 4 miles at marathon pace

Thursday- Rest

Friday- 6 miles with Yasso 4x800

Saturday- Rest

Sunday- 20 miles. This was a negative split run. I ran the 2nd half faster than the 1st. I also didn’t listen to any music for the first 10 miles. This was a great run that boosted my confidence. Here is a list of some things I believe contributed to a successful 20 miles:

  • Temperature was slightly cooler than normal and there was a breeze.
  • I wore compression socks.
  • I ate a GU at mile 5, 9, 13, and 17.
  • I brought 20 oz of water and 20 oz of an electrolyte drink.
  • I pushed myself to run stronger, faster, and to not stop.
  • An extra rest day.

Have you seen the new Dick’s Sporting Goods commercial, Come Back Untouchable? I love it. Every line spoken in that commercial, I can relate to my training.

When the speaker says, “It’s tough to come this far and lose. It hurts. But you are defined in life by the way you respond to defeat. That pit in your stomach: fill it with fire.” I will not be defeated by a crappy run. I will run stronger.

He goes on to say, “Remember this hurt. Think about it when you want to sleep-in in the morning. Think about it when you want to shut it down instead of doing an extra set.” I thought about my last (hurt) long run when I ran Sunday. I promised myself I would run stronger, faster, and not give into the pain.

“Promise yourself that you will never ever feel like this again” says the speaker. The harder I train now, the easier it will be come race day.

  1. Wow! I really want to run, but I think I need to lose alittle more weight, it hurts to run, lol! WTG! I seriously cant wait for the cooler weather, either!

  2. Excellent motivation and so very true. Sometimes it really comes down to mind over matter. Sometimes the body is willing and the brain isn't. Then other times, the body isn't willing and the mind is able. Such a mind game running is!
